Barkcloth became popular as sort of an antidote to the post depression...created using flamboyant colors and large scale patterns...that was both intentional and purposeful...priced affordably compared to the high end fabrics of the pre depression period...it was billed as a wash n wear type fabric...customized for the innovation of in home washing machines where homemakers could have the beauty of inspiring patterns...and also something affordable AND washable...it wasn't before long that catalogs were showcasing these treasured textiles sold by the yard...in bedspreads...one size fits all slipcover sets as well as a host of other home use inspirations...beloved by all...the middle class and the wealth aristocrats of the time...but nothing really sold tropical barkcloth like the entertainment industry in places like South Beach in Miami...where Art Deco hotels were popping up on sandy land parcels on the southern end of Miami Beach...dead ending at the port where the cruise ships pass by...it was the place vacation memories were made...Florida became a refuge in America where tourists could travel by car and plane to paradise without having to leave the country...and in many ways traveling to Miami is like leaving the country...in season Mr. Flagler made sure of ease of travel on his luxurious fleet of trains that would even go as far as Key West back in the day...creating memorable times for families alike...who would excitedly unload their baggage and children into these iconic hotels...filled with crazy fabulous colors and patterns of barkcloth...imagine the drama of floor to ceiling tangerine palm draperies pooling to the terrazzo floor in the sunken lobby bar...it was a inspiration and idea tourists brought back to their homes in anywhere USA...regardless of whether it was tropical or in the mid west...you began to see tropical draperies popping up everywhere...awakening the tropical at hearts in all of us...galvanizing something in people back then that would resonate even today with old tropical souls who wish nothing more than to time travel back to the days of Mr. Henry Flaglers railroad...and crazy fabulous barkcloth draperies blowing in the grand breezes of hotel windows off the Atlantic...

This auction is for ONE YARD x 49 inches wide (91.44cm x 124.46cm)....original unused off the bolt fabric...I have 4 yards available of this iconic period barkcloth textile that surely is right out of the spirit of Miami Beach...a colorway so fanciful it takes my breath away...a crisp white ground with the most terrific turquoise green and electric aqua...cocoa...varied grays...coral berry reds...slight pale pink...chartreuse...with a myriad of fabulous caribbean blue pops of color...accented with black...a thick and historically nubby authentic vintage barkcloth...hails from the 30's 40's...signed "CoFabco Vat Print Fully Guaranteed"...immaculate...unused...unwashed...and in the scheme of life changing...we are talking LIFE CHANGING!
