Aurora is one that never ever comes along...Ive made some fabulous very expensive pillows from this fabric...extremely collectible...the pattern is a exceptionally modern one with a definite deco trippy vibe...the colors and shapes are just beyond comparison...made in the mid to late 40's as america was fast approaching the 50's where modernism exploded...you can see it in its shapes and abstract effect...when I cleaned out hotels in Miami Beach there was one called the Amber Carlton on 23rd St...it was still barely thriving in the late 80's early 90's...it was close to a X theater and burlesque shows in the heart of South Beach...mostly Collins Avenue...the once demure playground of sophisticated Hollywood...the Amber Carlton was gay...and I mean old gay ok! These queens were old...I say this as an old queen myself...they owned the hotel since the 30's...always as a hotel for gay male clientele...a secret little hotel that operated on the down low in the 40's and 50's and paid city officials to not raid their bar and hotel...I could always rely on some great stories from some old pioneers...the Amber Carlton served tea at 4pm every day...a small dance party of old Miami Beach queens...I always loved old gay men...they had such wisdom and information of the dark underground of "homosexuality"...the stories they told of sneaking around to rendezvous with their beloveds and getting caught...so many were jailed during raids because they were dancing together...a far cry from the Miami Beach that we know now...4pm tea with Madonna playing in the background was a lesson on gay history for this once young queen...the Amber Carlton had these exact same Design Aurora pattern draperies hung side by side the lime Egret Swirl pattern...original to the decor of the hotel from when these guys first owned it...I am privileged to have the memories on file in my brain...the visuals of what I've seen I wish could be transported from my memory to film...my hunts and jaunts have led me through many hotels in Florida...memories that are sealed tightly in my eclectic memory vault in my head.
This offer is for ONE huge nearly brand new 1940’s deconstructed drapery panel measuring 49 inches wide x 80 inches long of a rare iconic design that has all the bones of a collaboration with Heywood Wakefield and maybe what you’d see covering some dining room chairs. A fabulous traditional barkcloth fabric...thick and nubby and that weave we all crave....a great vintage icon to make some wonderful funky pillows...or recover rattan cushions...or a Nelson or McCobb chair...or frame as testament to the era of modernism mid century 1940's...where the design evolution could be seen in the later 40's heading into the 1950's where these barkcloth designs became a design revolution with a more atomic spin...these prints were the prelude to the 50’s!!!! A bold chartreuse yellow mottled ground with a darker chartreuse gold flecks...waves of mid century abstract shapes in lime...chocolate...dove gray...with black and white...it is signed in that rare signature of this prime pattern and colorway "Guaranteed to be a Goldco Vat Print Aurora"...definitely a special treat for any collector or designer with an ounce of heirloom upcycle-abilities! There is a small piece 3 inches long sewn to the top that I left which was part of the drapery panel. This textile is still crisp Wirth that stiffness of a off the bolt barkcloth. Flawless.
