Her hair was bleach blonde always in a banana clip and she always had a radiant tan...makeup to the nines and her tiny little convertible sports car...it was the 70's and she was probably in her 70's...but she had a facade and spirit about her of a young woman...her name was Dolly...and she lived in my neighborhood...if she wasn't tending to her garden in espadrilles and her shirt tied up around her waist...then you could find her on the boardwalk with her big black Audrey Hepburn sunglasses...facing the sun...often in her winter coat on the side of the old concrete 1920's natatorium...so the walls would protect her from the winter winds of the Jersey Shore...she lived for sunshine...she had a gaggle of gay guys always at her side...she was one of the prettiest and most loving souls...just one who has touched my life...she was vegan and when I was so clueless as to even what that meant...who loved animals so much her home became a refuge for birds and baby squirrels...and any cat that was lucky enough to show up to her doorstep...she loved my visits...I was just 12...I'd ride my bike over and knock on the door and she would answer as if she was expecting me...every single time...always with "Oh Brian I just made fresh brownies"...or "you are just in time for tea and gingerbread cookies"...her house was a barkcloth treasure trove...a small cottage...every window adorned with her favorite cottage prints...she loved lace...lace was everywhere...in between doorways and swagged over her barkcloth draperies...her voice was smokey like Lauren Bacall...in fact she very well could have been her twin...we had real conversations...like adult ones most adults would never engage a child...things like the earth and peace...and always making sure you are a good person...Dolly was just one of many women who touched my life...its been 30 something years since I last saw her sunning on the Spring Lake boardwalk...with a ring on every finger and her notorious bleach blonde hair in a banana clip....ageless...timeless and classic...as always.
