Black before the mid 1900's was not very much a decorating trend as you can imagine...gothic was certainly a style and era...but black in design style was simply always rare...as it remains today...only a certain eye can be drawn to it...so in the late 1930's when the entertainment industry of Miami Beach was really beginning to gain steam...the vibrant colorful tropical barkcloths started coming out...on BLACK grounds...it was perhaps the first trendy wave of black decorator fabrics in history to be so revered and beloved...the textile artists themselves brazen and accomplished at creating a vibe that would become a city showcased to the world...it was not uncommon that one large boutique hotel on Ocean Drive would have each guest room in the same tropical pattern...but each floor a different colorway of that same pattern...as a sort of young whippersnapper than those who actually lived and breathed this wonderful stuff in the 1930's when it was created...I was fortunate enough to often times be the last person inside some of these structures before they were torn down in the late 80's after years of blight...most of them still somewhat furnished with draperies still hung in place...boards on windows with drilled holes for air...I could be wandering around the 10th floor and peep through one of those holes out to the beautiful turquoise blue sea and be transported back in time...the sounds of swing bands and jazz quartets and the aroma of the salty sea...I can imagine a 30 something year old couple lavishly luxuriating on the mohair sofa gazing out the large bank of windows before heading downstairs for dinner in the open air dining room...this was Miami Beach...a place worthy of fashion designer lines of textile being designed specifically for those hotels...imagine that!
This very special offering is for ONE ready to hang drapery panel...I have another exact match also available. If you love a heavy traditional TEXTURED weave barkcloth...then you have met your match...the colors on this fabric are phenomenal...BOLD...and BRIGHT...the black is as black as if it was brand new...not an ounce of fading...all of the colors stunningly radiant...illuminating and brilliant...electric limes and lemon yellow makes the yellow almost appear chartreuse...hibiscus in dark merlot burgundy and punches of delightful coral red and coral/shell pink...dramatic caladium leaves in shades of charcoals and dove grays...sing in harmony with the rest of this quartette of spectacular colors...iconic for the time and period...
