The 1939 World’s Fair hosted varied tents on site to showcase innovation of the machine age...and barkcloth was front and center with some of the most iconic designs that were infiltrating South Beach Art Deco hotels at the time. It was a colorful display of textiles with advertising they were washable for a wash and wear world. These iconic designs such as this are all that is left of the cottons hanging around Miami Beach in the 30’s...designs so inspiring they resented to tourists who then went back to their nests and re-created the same aesthetics.
This offering is for ONE ready to hang exotic architecturally significant thick and nubby barkcloth in unused unwashed condition...I have TWO available sold individually. Seemingly made into a drapery panel with a hems at top and bootie and original selvedge edges that make it present as unused. The nubby barkcloth itself so crisp and new feeling...it was part of a fabric and drapery shop I bought in 1989 that had been shuttered for decades...so made into draperies and never picked up...someone caught in the misery and sadness of a widow who lost her husband and closed it. A creamy handsome gray ground with fronds swirling...feathery ferns...tropical leafery and an overall deliverance of design that is time transportive to South Beach 1937. Pool turquoise...chartreuse....dark teal...dark chocolate...merlot...magenta...bubble gum...with white accents. Signed “A Goldco Vat Print”. If you believe in kismet...then you know they have been yours all along.
