The Tree of Life is an important symbol in nearly every culture...with its branches reaching into the sky...and roots deep in the earth...it dwells in three worlds...a link between heaven...the earth...and the underworld...uniting above and below...it is both a feminine symbol...bearing sustenance and a masculine...visibly phallic symbol... in Jewish and Christian mythology a tree sits at the center of both the Heavenly and Earthly Edens...the Norse cosmic World Ash...Ygdrassil...has its roots in the underworld while its branches support the abode of the Gods... and the Egyptian’s Holy Sycamore stood on the threshold of life and death...connecting the worlds...and to the Mayas... it is Yaxche...whose branches support the heavens...it is always interesting to me how tradition and historical ideologies continue to inspire patterns in home decor...a rather indignant form of never having to truly reinvent the wheel...but to tweak the design to mirror the times and trends of the times...yes...even in the mid century barkcloth textiles being printed as a reflection of the times as well as the history of styles throughout history that were successful at inspiring earthlings...
This offering is for 2.2YDS x 49 wide of unused unwashed original old stock thick and nubby barkcloth...in a design palette that reminds me of some of Lucienne Day’s mid century works...surely grand and fabulous as you can see from my photos...one of those once in a lifetime opportunities that comes along and tugs on those old heart strings...in a way that leaves you wanting more...falling asleep dreaming of the projects that could be fabulitized using such iconic period cloth...stored for nearly 70 years since it was mass produced by machines that was making this great stuff available to eager designers around the world...brilliant colorway of tangerine and lime...darkest chocolate...with white accents on a chino light coffee ground with a historic LUREX gold threading iconic what designers were romancing modernists with in the period...signed "Printed Vat Dyes" on the selvedge...clean and amazing...a clear front runner when it comes to some of the most terrific of vintage textiles...placed at around the late 40's and more so 1950...a certain catch for anyone looking to stroke their old vintage soul in just the RIGHT way!
