50’s Under the Sea Margaret Smith Novelty Fish Seahorse Coral Purse Handbag

Margaret Smith founded her handbag company in Maine in the 1940s, at the suggestion of friends she had made beach totes for as gifts. Her brother, financier Cyrus Pinkham, and professional designer Bill Waters helped her launch her business, eventually joining her full-time as it rapidly expanded (at its height, the company had over 30 employees). Typically designed with floral prints, her bags were sold in women’s specialty shops and, in the 1950s/1960s, by Bonwit Teller.

This offering is for ONE purse small handbag that looks completely unused and flawless. Even the bottom of the bag remains as if it were never set down anywhere. A Kelly green cotton with under the sea life in the most scrumptious novelty form. Fish...seahorses and coral take center stage in a figural display of sea life from a 1950’s colorful pop perspective. Radiant magenta and bubble gum pinks...purple...minty pastel green...periwinkle...lemon yellow..and a even darker purple with white accents. The inside of the bag is a purple satin with 3 separate compartments...the center compartment has a zipper closure. A immaculate signed label is tucked away sewn into the body of the bag “Margaret Smith Gardiner Maine”. Measures 11” wide...8” long and 5” in depth at its widest point...with 5” straps...all encompassing the overall measurement including straps and bag is 12”.
