Nana always loved her lavender...filling the white metal closet in the hallway outside the bathroom with bars and bars that would create a fragrance in that house as soon as I reached about mid way up the stairs to the second floor...it would just hit me...she was passed on for 14 years and that aroma still hung around...essential oils of her life infused in the fibers of the wallpaper...the scatter rugs...and I swear even the clawfoot tub...she also loved her mimosa tree in the back yard next to the fig tree of their Jersey Shore cottage...it was there she would sit for shade while pop tended the figs that would dry beside the old potting shed...that had a odor of dirt and gasoline...forever etched into my smell memory bank...who'da known 40 years later the common smells I breathed in...that I didn't even consciously know of...were being taken in...absorbed carefully...processed and bottled in the annals of my mind...that release every once in a while...almost as a purposeful reminder of my loved ones passed...that they are always with me in my own spirit...planted deep inside me...they may be out of sight...but I once knew them...and that makes them a part of me...today we gather to pay tribute to our nana and pop pop under a mimosa tree pop planted when nana passed...he said she always did love her shade...that tree some 40 feet tall beside their tombstone...it stands as one of few trees in that sweet cemetery overlooking the great Atlanta Ocean...that survived the storms...the hurricanes...like an old shoe...that mimosa tree still thrives.
