An ode to the Royal Palms Hotel circa 1988!
The rainbow colored parrot at under the marque at the Royal Palm Hotel in 1988 said "come back now"...he was housed in quite a large rusty cage...the greeter to the passersby...it was something I never really forgot...as this parrot was surely out of place...why you may as well have placed a beautiful parrot outside a dilapidated hotel in the middle of war torn Beirut...but inside this run down still running boutique hotel was Gloria...the Tales of Two Cities version of Mrs Madrigal of South Beach...the long time manager of the once grand dame of Collins Ave...where the the fluorescent lights some 30 years earlier were the bold lights of neon hotel signs...blinking vacancy signs...that turned quickly to the seedy fluorescent lighting of burlesque and triple x theaters became of the once flavorful gathering places for families and tourists alike...Gloria was a survivor...she lived in the original owners apartment behind the check in desk...an eccentric by nature...the people I am always most drawn...she was swathed always in a colorful kimono...and her crazy red hair messily in a up do...she smoked like a chimney and was always found sitting out front in her 50's lawn chair barefoot...smoking...silver rings on every finger as well as a necklace ring that spanned from her rings...across the top of her hand to her bracelet...you know the type...my visual should lock in a image for you immediately :) she was an icon...I dare not call people crazy...I've always found more normalcy in the crazy...and more crazy in the "normal"...Gloria was testament to the times...a survivor of the times...just looking for a place to rest her gypsy soul...she was the keeper of many prestigious patterns of barkcloth...still hung in their original places...flanking windows overlooking the once hustle and bustle of days past...she was a wheeler and dealer...and sold me some very iconic patterns and colorways...one of which was this same pattern and colorway 30 years ago...so when these treasures come back for a visit...even as temporary as it may be...its a visit with my past...which makes it all worthwhile...

This auction is for ONE YARD x 49 inches wide of unused unwashed old stock yardage...I have 4YDS available sold by the yard...of original barkcloth from the Art Deco era of the 30's....if you are a tropical at heart who travels the world over for some of the most flamboyant and crazy tropical barkcloths...then this is one unmatched...unparalleled...simply the best of the best! One of the most rare patterns and colorways of spectacular tropical barkcloth...a rich and luxurious texture...check my pics and see the close ups of the texture and details of the sweet colors...you will see a texture and colorway just better than the rest...yes thick...yes nubby...yes traditional in weave...but this pattern and colorway brings more to the table than most...its these life size banana and bird of paradise leaves in these wild shades of tangerine...orange...and corals...paired beside lemon and chartreuse yellows...with lattes and chocolates...cocoas...and creamy charcoal and dove grays with avocado lime and black and white accents on a brilliant rare asparagus lime green... a true WILD and CRAZY authentic barkcloth from the era of the greatest textiles every made. Flawless.
