The burbs were the catalyst behind the mid century modern movement...the idea of lavish ranch one floor living..tract housing that often implied cookie-cutter...but in the 50's world of mid century architecture...varied homes' rooflines...paint schemes... and setbacks from the street so no two tract homes next to each other looked the same...despite all having one basic floorplan...it was the departure from downtown 2-3 story living in old homes...where laundry rooms were outside in detached garages and the stairs a begrudging exercise...mid century living became all about everything historic downtown living was not...the times reflected that...the sense of community and social clubs and activities all played a part in drawing people across newly built bridges during a population boom...today these mid century neighborhoods still have the same residents...mostly white haired and having already raised their families...fancy pools with indoor bathroom access...oversized angular garages with ping pong tables...for those who built their lives in these architectural dreamlands...they will die there...
This wonderful offering is for ONE salesman sample that came from the collection of Michelle Mancini of Full Swing Textiles and author of "Fabulous Fabrics of the 20's 30's 40's & 50's"...this unused super cool relic has its original label in mint cond...this is a glazed acrylic barkcloth...a nubby texture that through the use of innovation was coated in a fiberglass/acrylic that gives it a advanced modern essence. The ground is a avocado lime...musical atomic lyrical notes suspended in air in yellow...orange...gray...black...white and gold metallic. These salesman Samples are today perhaps the closest you can get to any true history on textiles made in the early 20th century to the mid century. Here in this batch of pure wonder of fiberglass/acrylic is all the information you need for which to document these terrific textiles. A spectacular example of mid century modernism at its best...a pattern showcasing the elements of abstract art...the amoeba kinetic effect made popular by Calder...and pops of color that together create a masterpiece of textile art...made from the best of the 50's designs...unused unwashed and bold...bright...Flawless.
