I can describe the style of this beautiful rare early barkcloth...but instead let me tell you where it came from and I think THAT will tell you all you need to know :) In 1991...I bought it at a Coral Gables estate sale of a 1920's mansion overlooking a Venetian pool and fabulous waterways that are still in use today in this exclusive Miami neighborhood. The house was 3 stories with a tall outlook tower perch...abode roof...painted white stucco with black trim...the windows and doors had mexican designed tiles surrounding them...the inside terracotta floors...wrought iron...mint green tiled bath...elaborate vaulted ceilings. The house was still furnished in its true Mexicana style from the period it was built...like a museum...a set of Heywood Wakefield rattan covered in this very fabric. What I have that I am offering is the yardage left over that was found in a closet. If anything sings of true Mexicana 1920's...it is this great unused yardage.
This offering is for ONE YARD x 39 inches wide....I have 5YDS available being sold by the yard. A thick and nubby textured authentic barkcloth...the width as noted is 39 inches...which is a unusual width...but consistent with many prints before the boom of industrail machines and vats. The colors and pattern tell a story that is both original and chic...electric neons...blue...fiesta pink...chartreuse...lime...purple...and a dark pinky chocolate on a cream ground. This yardage is unwashed and in immaculate condition.
